The section of grass that had been reserved for the class was completely covered with clutter. There were cages assembled on fold-out tables with large and exaggerated locks bolting shut small cages with tiny but strange creatures inside. There are cardboard boxes that clatter and rock as students walk by them. Carpets that shifted underfoot carved pathways around the clearing. Nametags sit on chairs that are arranged in a circle around a podium that is reserved for the professor. Standing behind the podium is Professor Koth. He cleared his throat and tapped his wand on the desk to get everyones attention.
“Hello, and thank you for coming. I am Ehren Koth, your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Welcome to the first class.” The professor cleared his throat, and began his introduction speech.
“In my youth, we never had to worry about any shady characters. None of my neighbor’s front doors had locks on them, and brooms were not kept in the garage, but left on sidewalks overnight. People were more trusting, because they had no reason to fear thy neighbor. As I grew older, the world grew darker, and now we have reached a state of fear and suspiscion that can only be reduced with the help of our future generations.” The professor surveyed the students before him.
“Although I was never was an auror, I have had many experiences against dark wizards.” The professor swallowed. “However, I was unprepared and had to pay a price.” Koth lifted his chin, and continued. “As the number of dark wizards increase every year, it has now become a necessity to take Defense Against the Dark Arts. It is like preparing soldiers for battle. It has become almost impossible to avoid dark wizards in a time like this. I assume all of you understand when I say that taking Defense Against the Dark Arts is a necessity, and just the fact that you are here sitting in front of me proves that you are wise enough to comprehend the state of modern society and its need to be rescued.”
“But even though the outlook looks so grim, I am determined to make this class fun and interesting.” Professor Koth stepped out from behind the podium and clapped his hands.
“So...we will now start the first lesson. Since I don’t know your magical skills yet, today’s lesson is devoted to judging your reactions in a few situation tests, and grading you depending on the steps you take to complete your goal.” Professor Koth motioned for the students to stand, and immediately after they did he made their chairs vanish so that they had more work room.
“There will be five situations. Each situation is worth two points, if your goal is properly completed. No additional points may be added if a student shows exceptional talent, since today is our first lesson, and these tests are nothing but my way of determining your magical abilities. Everyone understand? Good.”<br>
“Today’s first situation will require you to partner up. Once you have found a partner, you may begin to practice disarming eachother with Expelliarmus. The faster you can rally, the better you will be prepared if in a duel. This exercise will tell me how well each of you can do the spell, as well as how good your reflexes are. Now please, partner up, and begin! I will announce when it is time to stop.” Professor Koth smiled and added, “If there are any extras, please don’t hesitate to be my partner.”
